Hi there!
April is always a special month at SPACE. Over the Easter Holiday, our centres’ youth workers and young people take part in our service-wide Social Action Week. Although we weave social action into everything we do, this week is an opportunity, whilst the young people are on Easter Break, to do something really special. So without further ado, let’s hear all about what our centres got up to!
A reminder that all the centres have their own social media accounts where you can keep up with everything going on locally, as well as important info like upcoming opportunities for young people and opening times! |

Tiverton’s Fundraising Goes Stratospheric |
Tiverton Youth Centre hosted its first ever Row-A-Thon to raise funds for its upcoming Activities Programme. Young people, youth workers and members of the local community all got stuck in to row all the way to outer space, and we’re delighted to say we hit our goal of 100km rowed (and then some!). We are hugely grateful to the several members of the local police, the Tiverton Street Marshalls, local Councillor Steve Lodge and 5x Olympian Chris Maddox who all came along and put it in a shift to get us out of orbit! A particular highlight of the day was one young person who rowed 21km (a half marathon!) over the course of the day, making up over 20% of our total rowing distance.
Between sponsorship for the Row-A-Thon and the accompanying bake-sale we have raised £350 towards Tiverton Youth Centre’s activities programme, which will begin this summer, giving young people affordable access to fun trips and activities during the holidays and beyond.
We want to give special thanks to Willow Tree Barn Fitness, who kindly lent us the rowing machines, and help with so much of the set up and logistics of making this fantastic event happen! https://willowtreebarn.co.uk/ |

Cakes for the Community In Newton Abbot |
Our young volunteers recently connected with various community services in a wonderful intergenerational project. They baked cakes and delivered them to a local care home, hospital, police station, library, charity shop, and local business to build bridges and connect across different services and generations.
The young people received a lovely thank you in return: bracelets made by some of the care home residents. They also shared a poignant letter they wrote about the experience of being young today and the negative perceptions they sometimes face in the community. |

Our incredible young people were hard at work, dedicating their time and effort to redecorating Room 13! Their commitment to improving the space for everyone is truly inspiring. A huge thank you to all the volunteers who helped transform the room. |

The Hive Causing a Buzz in the Local Community |
The young people from The Hive Youth Centre were busy bees during Social Action Week, undertaking two fantastic community initiatives. Firstly, a group of young volunteers spent time at Exmouth Library, helping staff reorganise shelves and prepare for an upcoming book fair. Their efforts were a huge help to the library team and reinforced the positive relationship between The Hive and local community resources.
But the action didn't stop there! The Hive also organised and hosted a Bingo Night for the residents of a local care home. The young people took charge of everything, from setting up the room and calling the numbers to serving refreshments and chatting with the residents. It was a great evening creating wonderful intergenerational connections and proving that a simple game of bingo can be a powerful tool for bringing different parts of the community together.

A Young Volunteer Celebration and One Year of New Georgies! |
On April 16th, we held a special celebration to thank our amazing young volunteers for their commitment, enthusiasm, and hard work over the past year. This event also marked the first anniversary of the opening of our 'New Georgies' facility. The evening was a fantastic opportunity to recognise the invaluable contribution of these young people who dedicate their time to making a real difference in their communities and within our centres. We shared stories of their achievements, presented certificates of appreciation, and enjoyed celebratory food and music. Their energy and passion are truly the driving force behind so many of SPACE's successes, and we look forward to another year of working alongside them! |

Raising the Roof with 100 Club’s New DJ Booth
Thanks to funding from Exeter City Council, the 100 Club was able to refurbish its DJ booth and systems during Social Action Week. Young people helped take apart the previous booth, and designed, constructed and painted the new one. |
