| | Hi!
The summer is always a special time at SPACE as we get out and about in the community and look to the school summer holidays and beyond. Here’s a round-up of what we’ve been up to over the last three, very busy, months!
A reminder that all of our youth centres have their own social media accounts where you can keep up with everything going on locally, as well as important info like upcoming opportunities for young people and opening times! |

| | We Made SPACE for Summer! |
|
| | | Our youth workers across Devon, with the generous help of many funders and supporters, are able to take young people on multiple summer trips. Many would not be able to experience such activities without our support. This year, trips included visits to Crealy, Woodlands, Splashdown, Adrenalin Quarry and Ultimate Adventure.
There was also a Forest School residential held at Taw Bottom, where young people learnt forest skills, developed team building and cooked their food around an open fire. They also experienced some wildlife including deer, a visiting wood mouse, a wide variety of dragonflies and damselflies, and were serenaded at night by some Tawny Owls.
These experiences are very special and mean a lot to the young people and our team. Thank you to everyone who contributed funds to enable them to happen. Young people told us:
“It was nice to spend time as a group of mates”
“I had fun doing flips and jumping off of the heights”
“Can we do trips every year?”

Summer Drop Ins, Sessions & HAF Events |

|
| Throughout the summer, whilst schools are closed, youth centres have been holding drop ins, special activity sessions and events in the community as part of Devon’s Holidays and Food programme (HAF).
These included:
Creative sessions at The Hive in Exmouth where young people tried new crafts and let their creative juices flow
The Bideford Big Sleepover where young people joined the youth workers in spending the night at Bideford Youth Centre. They cooked food, played games and had a brilliant time.
A rounders game in Tiverton between the local police, SPACE staff and young people (young people won!).
HAF events across Devon, including Ilfracombe, South Molton, Ivybridge, Cranbrook, Tiverton & Okehampton. Activities like sumo suits, zorbs and dodgeball were all put to good use!
One young person said; “This has been the best thing so far this summer!”

| | The Hive held their annual Hive Live in Manor Gardens, Exmouth giving young people to show off their talent and skills to the local community. We had young people come from multiple centres to perform, including young people from Bideford and Barnstaple.
We also held our Hive Live Raffle and managed to raise £200 to go towards next year's Hive Live and resources for our youth sessions, so thank you to everyone who bought a raffle ticket.
Also a big thank you to Exmouth Town Council who generously donated money towards this year’s Hive Live. |

BBC Radio Devon Make a Difference - Young Hero Award |
|
|
Kirsty, a youth worker from Georgies Youth Centre in Barnstaple, nominated 15-year-old volunteer Max for the BBC Radio Devon Make a Difference Young Hero Award, an honour celebrating under-16s who create a positive impact in their local community. We are proud to say that Max was shortlisted for the Award and, although, he didn’t win the top prize, we are proud to know and work with him. Well done Max!
“At the youth centre, Max plays a vital role mentoring peers and running activities during Friday night Junior sessions. Impressively, he maintained his strong dedication to volunteering while balancing the demands of his GCSE studies. We are thrilled to share that Max was chosen as one of only five finalists in the category - a well-deserved congratulations to Max!”

| | Please Help - A Consultation on young people’s Smoking and Vaping Habits |
|
|
SPACE is working with Devon County Council to help the Public Health team understand more about young people's use of products containing nicotine - their smoking and vaping habits. This survey is short and straightforward and completely anonymous. Insights gained will help shape policy moving forward. Please help us to reach as many young people as possible. Young people who do not smoke or vape are also invited to take part.

“I thank you for creating a place where young people with additional needs feel they can fit in, feel safe & included in an environment tailored to their needs, when others exclude them.” The HangOut Parent |
