The Hive YC Jumble Sale

Raising money for local Afghan support and the Turkey & Syrian Earthquake Fund

Fundraising is an excellent way to make a difference in your community and the world at large. It is a way of coming together, pooling resources, and helping those who need it the most. One such fundraiser that recently took place was a jumble sale organised by young people at The Hive, Exmouth. The fundraiser aimed to raise money for the local Afghan support through Seachange and the Turkey & Syrian Earthquake Fund via Oxfam.

The jumble sale took place on a Monday morning in February half term at The Hive Youth Centre, Exmouth. The young people who organised the fundraiser had collected items for the sale from their friends, family, and others around them. The sale was bursting with a wide range of items, including clothes, books, shoes, ornaments, tea & coffee, and cakes that were donated to space.

The jumble sale attracted people from the local community whether they were passing by or out for the occasion.

The event was organised by young people between the academic years of year 7 and 11. The young people involved were out in force, running stalls, taking donations and helping the community connect and come together.

The Space staff working the event were extremely  pleased with how well the event went. All  the young people involved will take valuable life skills away from the day that they can  include on their future CVs. Planning, preparing and running the fundraiser boosted the young peoples’  confidence in all areas including communication and developing life skills like  as money counting, visual merchandising and planning and time management skills. One young person in particular is now aspiring to be a young volunteer at The Hive when they are old enough.

The young people's dedication paid off and they were able to raise £87 to split evenly between the two causes, with half going to Seachange for their work supporting refugees and displaced people in Afghanistan, and half going to Oxfam for their Turkey & Syrian Earthquake fund. £12 was raised for Space from the teas and coffees and the young people were also able to donate a car full of donations to Oxfam, Save the Children & British Red Cross.

The 8 Young people who got involved received a ‘we notice you award’ for helping out with the event from start to finish.

The jumble sale fundraiser organised by young people at their youth centre was a great success, raising money for two vital causes. The team and young people are enthusiastic about keeping the momentum going and are already thinking about future events to raise money for the Young People’s summer activities.
